Subaru and the Many Hats of Mom

In 1991 I bought my first new car. I had some very specific wants for my new car.  I had just graduated college and I was, for the first time, getting a car that was not a hand me down from a family member.  I had spent months dreaming about what was important to me in a new car.

The first and most important thing was that the new car be an automatic. I was sick and tired of driving a manual transmission in LA bumper to bumper traffic. Next I wanted cloth seats. My first car had been a Black 1972 Cadillac Coupe de Ville with black leather seats. I still have
scars from sitting on those seats after they had heated to 9,000 degrees parked in the sun all day. Speaking of sitting in the sun all day, I also needed air conditioning, I couldn't afford to arrive at my new job wilted from driving with the window down hoping for a cool breeze.

And lastly but certainly not least I wanted cup holders. Now some of you reading this might not remember when cars didn't have cup holders, but I do and I wanted cup holders BAD.

Now I am a mom and my needs have changed quite a bit from when I was a young twenty something single
career girl. But my need for cup holders has only intensified. As a mom anything less that 8 cup holders in a car is unconscionable. But other than cup holders there a certain things that are a must in the mommy car. Now I welcome leather seats. This is because of the number of times people have thrown up in my car. And not the fun naked wasted throw up either. It is the two year old has the flu, projectile vomiting which causes a chain reaction among all the other riders in the car kind of throw up.

Leather seats and rubber floor mats make vomit clean up easier. If a car company really wanted to sell vehicles they would put a place in the back for a paper towel roll and a tissue box holder in each door in the back. This would help the mommies keep boogery kids clean, while making clean up in isle 2 easier for all spills etc.

I have had the pleasure of putting the Subaru Forester through its paces to see if it can handle all the jobs I do as a mommy. In the next few articles I will be talking about how well the Subaru Forester performed each of my many jobs. Frankly I think it would be difficult for any one car to do EVERYTHING but the Forester is a great wing man for mom.

My Subaru Forester came very well equipped with leather seats,  AM/FM/XM radio with CD player, GPS, Sun Roof, 8 cup holders seating for 5 ( A little cramped but we got 3 big teen aged boys in the back seat), all weather package with heated front seats, (mama REALLY likes that), phone intergration and a full tank of gas all for a sticker price of only $29,920 plus all the blah blah blah taxes.

  1. Isn't it funny how something as simple as cup holders can make a driving experience much more pleasant? I guess it's because we spend so much time in our cars now. Truly, we live in them, so they need to have what we need.

    1. I would spend less time in the car if I didn't have so many games, recitals and kids to pick up go to etc. Yes my cup holder it my favorite item...well the satellite XM radio is pretty awesome too.

  2. Interesting how things change (needs, necessities, priorities) once we become parents. Looks like you've found a winner, here.
Like Gina said, this is pretty important - some of us practically live in our vehicles with the back and forth and daily errands.

    1. the Subaru guys told me later that the car comes with both rubber and carpet mats. The rubber mat in the back is wonderful for muddy gear, sandy gear and protecting against spills.

  5. Funny how we want all of the cool, fun stuff when we are younger and then those kids come along and everything changes. Vomit in the car is always fun to clean up. You got those 8 cup holders though! Yay you. And heated seats too. Whoo Hoo!! Kathleen @ Fearlessly Creative Mammas
