Summer in LA...

In Los Angeles, the days are long, but the nights are even longer and more leisurely now that summer has arrived.  Concerts under the stars and outdoor movies with some very unusual settings are what make the city sizzle all summer long.  Grab a blanket, maybe a bottle of wine, and tune in to the ultimate summer vibe.

Budweiser Made In America Festival (Downtown)—This annual music festival, founded in 2012 and held in Philadelphia, makes its West Coast debut at Grand Park in Downtown L.A., Aug. 30 and 31. The two-day event, produced by Jay-Z, will take place simultaneously on both coasts and features several stages of live music from a wide range of genres, including hip hop, rock, pop, and R&B. Among the line-up: Imagine Dragons, John Mayer, Weezer, Kendrick Lamar, Sublime with Rome and Nipsey Hustle.    www.madeinamericafest.com/mainlanding

FYF Fest (Downtown)—This two-day jamfest will be held at the LA Sports Arena and Exposition Park offering audiences a choice of indoor and outdoor seats with extensive grassy lawns and shade to keep cool (and look cool).   Twin Peaks, Man Man along with 50 other artists and DJs will keep things rockin,’ Aug. 23 and 24.  www.fyffest.com

Hollywood Bowl – (Hollywood)—This year marks the Hollywood Bowl’s 92nd year as one of the city’s premiere places to enjoy music under the stars.  It’s said that summer never really happened unless you spent at least one balmy evening enjoying the sounds of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.  This season features the talents of Elvis Costello, Pink Martini and, the very popular, The Sound of Music sing-a-long.  Add a picnic dinner, bottle of wine and, voila, you’ve created the quintessential L.A. summer evening. www.hollywoodbowl.com

Grand Performances Summer Festival (Downtown)—Taking place in Downtown’s California Plaza, this annual summer series stages an array of live entertainment, from world-class and world-renowned artists to those with roots closer tied to the City of Angels.  Food and beverages are available at this never-ending party.  www.grandperformances.org

Cinespia (Hollywood)—Watch current and classic films alongside Hollywood legends at Cinespia’s Cemetery Movie Screenings. Movies are projected onto one of the many mausoleums at the famed Hollywood Forever Cemetery.  A Who’s Who of Hollywood, the cemetery backs up to Paramount Studios and is the final resting place for Mel Blanc, Douglas Fairbanks and many others.  This summer season promises a line-up of blockbuster hits, DJs and guest speaker specials.  Just bring a blanket, a picnic dinner, drinks (wine and beer permitted), and low back chairs then get ready for a night under (and above!) the stars.  www.cinespia.org

Eat/See/Hear (various locations)—It’s the equivalent of the modern-day drive-in movie, only you park yourself instead of the car.  Eat/See/Hear moves weekly from location to location with its inflatable screen and fleet of local food trucks.  This dog-friendly gathering also features live music before every show.  Get ready for some lights, camera and plenty of action all summer long. www.eatseehear.com

Friday Flights & Saturdays off the 405 at The Getty Center (Westside)—Bringing together a network of L.A.-based musicians, performance artists, visual artists and creative thinkers, Friday Flights is an evening explosion of sights and sounds with a DJ set, thought-provoking gallery chat, video art, dance and more.  And, with the word “flight” in its moniker, this Friday night gathering, taking place from 6-9 p.m. high atop the outdoor space of The Getty, expect a cash bar with local craft beer and bites. Those looking for a mid-weekend hangout can enjoy outdoor music and the summer exhibitions at Saturdays Off the 405. The evening features performances by your soon-to-be favorite bands, along with DJ sets to open and close the night. www.getty.edu
