For the past three years Airborne has been obsessed with Cake walks. Every Harvest Festival, Spring Fair Summer Picnic that we go to that has a Cake walk, Airborne is there. He has walked about 50 times trying to win the stupid cake. He will buy tickets until he is broke and can no longer beg money form anyone in the family. As long as the cake walk is going on he wants to WIN THAT CAKE! I have tried to understand his compulsion to WIN a cake but I just can't see what he sees in the cake walk.
Last year he did about 8 cake walks winning absolutely nothing. the people at our table won about 5 cakes. Justin was dejected until they begged him to please take some of the cake. I had hoped that his bad experience would make him unwilling to do the cake walk any more but NO. Every cake walk we came across he had to try for another cake. And every time he would win nothing. I almost wanted to forbid him from playing because he had not ever won and I was concerned that he would some how be eternally damaged by continually failing to win a cake. But Agent Daddy said let him keep trying until he gets it out of his system.
So I would bite my tongue and hand him more money at each fair we went to that has a Cake Walk. So Last night, we attended the annual Harvest Festival at our church and the proverbial Cake Walk was going on. We had barely arrived and Airborne was asking for a ticket to go try the Cake Walk. He did the cake walk 4 times and did not win. It was getting close to bed time so we gathered everyone up and we had one last ticket. Airborne grabbed it and ran to the Cake Walk. The music begins, He starts marching around and when the music stops he quickly grabs his seat and the caller pulls a number. " Well we have had the same chair win many times tonight but this time I have pulled a number that has not been called all night. The person in that chair has played about five times tonight and he will be very excited to know that he has WON! NUMBER One please come Pick your cake!" Airborne jumps up and RUNS to the cake table. He begins inspecting all the cakes. I think he was still a little in shock that he won. He finally settled on a cake and we begin to leave. Agent Daddy leans over and whisper in my ear "See his persistence paid off. This was a good experience for him."
And Agent Daddy is right. I always want things to be easy for my boys but Airborne was beaming all the way home. Because he had to work so hard for so long to win the cake it meant more to him than if he just won easily every year. So now I have cake AND Halloween candy to add to my waist line. But it is ok because I have a really happy child too.
