The Dead Guy- Chapter 2

Chapter 2
What you talking about Willis?

"I am not supposed to talk to you" I said grabbing my bag and hoping my dignity was in there.
"Says Who?" Officer Yum asked.
"Says my lawyer." I went for haughty even though I was still mortified that he had heard me call him officer Yum
"And yet here you are talking to me." He smiled winked and walked back into the house.

As I watched him disappear, Drew Dylan, Dash and Hoover all approached from across the street. Dylan, always the ring leader, even in the presence of adults, said " I went to Mrs. Hoolihans house and asked what she saw today." Mrs Hoolihan was the neighborhood busy body. Since my divorce she had appointed herself keep of my virtue. If a man even walked past my house she would say " So you got a new boyfriend I see." She was sure that as a divorcee I was whoring it up. I hadn't had a date since the divorce 2 years ago.

"What did she say." I asked my sleuthing son.
"She said she saw your new boy friend let him self into the house around 11:00am this morning. Never saw him leave."

" My new boyfriend?" I questioned.

"The dead guy MOM?" He replied shaking his head at how dense he felt I was being.

"Is he your boyfriend?" Drew asked unhappily

"Who?"

"The dead guy." Everyone but hoover said in unison.

"Don't know who the dead guy is. How could he be my boy friend?"

"Why did Mrs. Hoolihan refer to him that way?" Drew inquired.

"Mrs Hoolihan thinks that because I am divorced I have become a "loose woman" she actually asked me if I was dating the postman."

"Have you?" Drew continued

"Have I what? Dated the post man? He is like 75 years old and has a hooked nose. Not that you should choose someone based on looks alone." I finished looking at the twins. I didn't want them to think I was shallow.

"Drew, why don't you take the boys back to your house for tonight. They can't sleep here and they have school tomorrow."

"Really Mom?!" Dash exclaimed disgusted."It's 9:00"

I ignored Dash and waited for Drew to respond. "Sure. Why don't you come home with me too." Drew's and my relationship was complicated. I believed that he had cheated on me. Primarily because one of his clients had come to me bawling her eyes out swearing that drew promised to marry her if only I would give him a divorce. So I did. Drew swore up and down that the woman in question was delusional and that he had never touched another woman since we met He gave me the divorce and had spent the last two years trying to win me back. The result of which was several steamy encounters and separate houses. I still loved Drew but I was hurt and angry. And every time he got under my skin it made me angrier. When he wasn't hitting on me we were civil and co parented very well.

" I think I will pass on that cowboy." I responded to his invitation. "I think I will sleep at Carolyn's" I am sure that Tim will let me go with my lawyer tonight and come in for questioning tomorrow.

"Are you sure you don't want to be with your boys tonight?" He asked playing the kid card. Damn him. "You could sleep in one of the boys rooms."

I was saved from answering by the arrival of my lawyer. "So who's the dead guy?" she asked walking up the drive.
"How should I know?"
"Uh...he was in your bed?"
"Yeah but he was there when I got home. I didn't bring him there."
"Ok, let me go talk to Tim and then I will take you where ever you plan to sleep tonight."
"Uh...I was hoping I could stay with you."
"Mmm not gonna work tonight sweetie. can't you stay with Drew?"
"Traitor."
"Yes" Drew and I answered simultaneously.
Carolyn had always believed Drew but she was my best friend so she sided with me...mostly.
Carolyn left and I turned to the boys. "Who's giving up their bed for mom?"
"I will." Dash said a little too quickly " Can go stay at a friends house."
"On a school night? You can sleep on the couch."
"Fine."

A few minutes later Carolyn returned " All set. We have to be at the Police Station at 10:30 am. All of us." She said taking in the boys, Drew and myself.
"Hoover too?" I asked faeciously
"Hoover can stay at Drew's. She likes him better anyway." she called back as she walked away.
"Bitch" I said under my breath.
"Mom!" Both boys yelled. My bad language was a source of endless needling by them.
"What I referring to Hoover." I said innocently. I grabbed my bag, headed for my car and turned to find the dog had in fact deserted me for Drew. She really does like him better I said to myself.
