13 Of the Safest Cars in 2013

When it comes to evaluating vehicle safety, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a top resource. For 2013, the institute awarded 13 top vehicles with the prestigious “top safety pick+” designation. These cars ranked “good” in at least four of the five tests and no lower than “acceptable” on the fifth.

Honda Accord Sedan

The Honda Accord Sedan is one of the very best choices on the top 13 list. Reliable, attractive and safe, this car is the ideal choice for those looking for the perfect sedan. This car earned top scores in all five of the crash tests.

Honda Accord Coupe

Like the four-door Accord, this car also earned top scores in all five crash tests. This compact model is ideal for people who don’t need a lot of space. Check out this vehicle at a dealer like Hoffman Honda.

Acura TL

The Acura TL got top ranks in all tests performed by the IIHS. This luxury sedan offers plenty of comfort and top features.

Volvo S60

The Volvo S60 earned top marks in all five of the crash tests, putting it an exclusive class among these top safety vehicles.

Chrysler 200 Sedan

With “good” scores in all areas except the small-overlap frontal crash test, where the car earned an “acceptable”, this is a top choice for safety on the road. Only the four-door model made it into the top 13, though.

Dodge Avenger

The small overlap frontal crash test was the only area where the Dodge Avenger earned an “acceptable” rating and not the top “good” rating.

Ford Fusion

Like many others on the list, the Ford Fusion only scored “acceptable” on the small-overlap frontal crash test, while earning top marks in all other categories. The top safety pick+ designation applies only to the redesigned Fusion built after December 2012.

Kia Optima

This car scored “good” in four of the five crash tests. Its only “acceptable” rating was for the small-overlap frontal crash test.

Nissan Altima Sedan

“Good” ratings in four of the five crash tests and an “acceptable” for the small-overlap frontal crash test put this car squarely in the middle of the pack. These top ratings apply only to the four-door Altima model built after November 2012.

Subaru Legacy

Four “good” ratings and an “acceptable” for the small-overlap frontal crash test make the Subaru Legacy a smart and safe choice.

Subaru Outback

If you’re looking for something a little roomier, this station wagon is a smart choice with top safety marks. Models built after August 2012 have earned the top safety pick+ designation. This vehicle rated “good” in four crash tests and “acceptable” in the small overlap frontal crash test.

Suzuki Kizashi

The Suzuki Kizashi is one of the few vehicles to earn a “good” score in the small-overlap frontal crash test. However, it earned only an “acceptable” in the roof-crush protection test where most others scored higher.

Volkswagen Passat

The top safety pick+ designation was given to the Volkswagen Passat built after October 2012. This vehicle earned four “good” ratings and one “acceptable” in the small overlap frontal crash test.
When you want a car with lots to offer in the way of safety, one of these top IIHS picks is a great choice.
