As a mom, you likely know all too well the fight
that your child can put up when they are told that they are going to see their
dentist for a checkup. The kicks, screams and pouts seem to start from the second
you leave the house until they are done with their examination and cleaning.
But, getting your child to the dentist doesn’t have to be
a scene for the rest of their lives. In fact, there are three simple ways to
help make the dentist’s chair a place that your child doesn’t fear. Perhaps you
could even turn it into a place that they enjoy visiting twice a year.
1. Start
them off young – One of the best ways to instill good dental habits and forge a
solid relationship between your child and their dentist is to take them to
their office early on. Many parents make the mistake of thinking their child
has to have all their teeth before they can send them to the dentist, but that
isn’t the case. In fact, many pediatric dentists recommend taking your child to
visit their dentist as early as a year old merely to address proper dental care
and ensure
baby’s teeth are all coming in properly. Children this young don’t have traditional cleanings performed yet, but rather this is a good time to start getting them acquainted with the office, the dentist and get parents up to speed on caring for developing teeth.

2. Set
a good example – A child that recognizes the importance of good oral hygiene,
through a positive example set by their parents, will likely take on that same
opinion. When possible, take your child with you to the dentist so that they
can see that you are comfortable with being in the dentist’s chair. Most
children want to be just like their parents, so when they see you putting on
the ‘big girl face’ with your dentist, they will be more likely to do the same.
Additionally, when you are at home you can teach them to brush their teeth
alongside you, and remind them that you are getting your smile ready for the
next dentist visit you both will have.
3. Choose
a dentist that knows kids – When choosing a dentist for your child, consider
choosing a professional that is dedicated solely to children. Pediatric
dentists specialize in understanding the oral care of children of all ages and
aim to make children as comfortable as possible. Most of the time their offices
are much more kid-friendly, there are prizes at the end of the visit and the
demeanor of the dentist and staff is one of fun and excitement for kids and
good dental health.
Teaching your child to enjoy visiting their San Diego pediatric
dentist doesn’t have to be very difficult, especially if
you utilize the aforementioned tips. You and your child’s dentist can help to
instill a lifelong appreciation for good oral health in your child.
