Meet Bea Miller-Raising Star

I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with Bea Miller last week. Let me tell you this is one beautiful young lady. Both inside and out. She is only 15 but already she realizes how other girls look at her as a role model.

We sat down to talk about the audio version of Deep Blue which she read, and the song from the book. we ended up talking about how she related to the characters and where she sees herself  going in the next few years.

Bea was born in NYC and her mom shared with me that she has always been an extraordinary girl, walking and talking at 6 months. She competed on the X-Factor and at 15 has a record deal with Hollywood records. I asked her What her business plan is. She thought for a minute and shared that she is starting out in the pop/rock genre but she hopes to see her music mature and evolve as she matures. She likes alternative and Rock music and can see herself exploring those areas musically. She also wants to be an example to other girls that it is okay to be different.
She want to help them embrace their own specialness and for them to be "comfortable in their own skin". She shared that she  hopes that she models that to her fans.

She also told me that she has always been interested in film and would love to go to film school at NYU if she can make that happen with her singing career.

Bea Miller, Me, Jennifer Donnelly
We then moved on to the real reason for the interview, Deep Blue, the first book in the Waterfire Saga by Jennifer Donnelly. Did I mention that Jennifer Donnelly was there with Bea and I as they both prepared for a Book signing and a sampling of Bea's beautiful voice? Well she was and this was the first face to face meeting for the three of us. We got along like a house on fire. We each connected in a unique way to the book and thus to each other.

Anyway back to the interview. I wanted to know how Bea felt she was like Serafina, the main character in the book. She said that she is a lot like Serafina in that she really wants to be just a normal girl. She isn't interested in all the trapping of the spotlight, much like Serafina wasn't interested in the spot light of being a princess.  She also shared that She and her mom,  have a very special bond like Serafina and her mom. She still feels the pressure of other peoples expectations and often  wants to "run away" like Serafina in the book.

Bea and Jennifer
I then asked how She is different from Serafina. She said she felt that Serafina was clearly not as out going as she. Also she felt that Serafina had yet to become comfortable in her roles and her "own skin." Bea has very admirably found a place where she can be herself and still shine.

Finally I asked her what she admired about the character Serafina. She said she really liked that she realizes pretty quickly what she has to do and she does it. Even though she is afraid. She steps up and raises to the challenge.

At that point we ran out of time, but mark my words, Bea Miller and Deep Blue are words you will be hearing a lot in the next few years. And you heard that from me first.
