I know I don't often post about great food in Orange County but I have to share this AWESOME place in Orange. 1535 Katella Avenue in Orange will become the new perfect hang out for you and your friends. Who Song and Larry's Cantina (WSL Cantina). The idea behind Who Song and Larry is great friends who traveled the world eating great foods and having great adventures. The Executive
Chef , Johannes Bernau, created Foodie Heaven from the shear genius inside his head.
I had the opportunity to taste almost the entire menu and there was not a miss anywhere on it. I would like to say the the atmosphere of this place is what draws
you in, the food will make you never want to leave. I suggest you sit at the bar outside. Alex our waitress and bar tender kept us laughing and between her and Chef Johannes I felt like I was having a get together with friends. Everything about WSL Cantina is fun. From the all the women I have loved before room, the decor ( "Start with a shot End with a shot" )over the bar area, and My favorite place, the outdoor patio and bar.
But enough of all that lets talk FOOD!
So we started out with of course drinks and chips and salsa. It isn't Mexican food without chips and salsa. they let me name the Raspberry Basil Lemonade the Triple D. Designated Drivers Delight. Agent Daddy was the designated driver but we wanted him to join the party. I don't know about you but having a great drink really sets the mood for everything else. Make sure you order a Triple D for your designated driver. Chef Johannes makes a special salsa that changes each week. The one on the left is the special salsa of the week. I could have eaten it with a spoon. The original salsa was just as good and the beans were perfect.
Next we had the totally unexpected and absolutly amazing Cold Smoked Salmon Tostada. HOLY CRAP where do I begin to describe how amazing this was? WSL Cantina smokes their salmon themselves, rule number one in perfection. Then they make this wonderful green onion crema slather it on the crunch shell and slap that perfectly thin sliced salmon on top. that alone would be pretty awesome but then Chef Johannes , genius that he is, puts citrus caviar also know as finger lime on top. ( When you go you have to get this starter. It will knock you out!
Lets talk hangovers...Okay just Hangover fries. I happen to LOVE french fries in all their many forms and mixtures. so I was pretty excited about trying these. What I didn't know was that these would ruin me for all other fries. Lets start with the fried egg on top. You break that beauty open and let the egg yolk mix with the melted pepper jack, bacon, and the pico de gallo and fries and that alone would be pretty awesome but no! That is not good enough for Chef Johannes. He goes and get the best, juiciest, melt in your mouth carnitas and adds that in there too. Making these the best fries I have EVER eaten.
How about some Muscles in a wine garlic butter sauce and the best bread in the world?
Just to show off, Chef Johannes brought out the Braised Rib Sopes. If you like ribs you will LOVE these. Agent Daddy refused to share. Said I couldn't appreciate them like he could.
Looking for "just a burrito" well go somewhere else. This Larry's burrito is a masterpiece. With Carnitas, bacon, chicharron, pickled red onion, and chili queso you need to be HUNGRY and you need to know you are in the presence of greatness.
Trying to eat lighter? Try the lemon herb chicken. Organic, free range chicken that is juicy flavorful with out being over powering and the season veg that was brussel sprouts and various other yumminess were perfection on a plate.
Or on the lighter side there was the Idaho Trout. This is rainbow trout done right. Perfectly seasoned. A white fish that is light and flavorful and fresh. the veg under it was roasted tomatoes, baby kale, onions and pork belly. This was one of the best things I ate and on a menu like this where nothing was bad, that is really saying something.
Now lets talk desert. the desserts here are good enough to make the trip. Some places you go for the drinks, the appetizers or the entrees but go else where for the dessert. Well not here. Chef Johannes does not whimp out at the end. He digs deep and brings out some of the best most wonderful desserts you can imagine. These little tastes of heaven are shrimp stuffed with a jalapeno that is stuffed with manchego cheese then wrapped in bacon. It is then dipped in a sweet teriyaki like sauce to create appetizer gold.
