Summer Reading List

If you read my blog with any regularity you know that I LOVE to read. So I thought I would share some great books that you and your kids can enjoy this summer.

Little Kids:

Chu's First Day of School- (Harper Collins) Coming out June 24th, this is a really cute way to get your pre schooler ready for his first day of school in the fall.

The Boys/ Girls Noisy Potty Book- This book is a board book that is perfect for getting your toddler ready to be potty trained ( Just in time for pre school in the fall.) There are hide and find flaps and hands on activities to promote early learning.

YA Books-

Under the Egg by Laura Mars Fitzgerald- (Penguin Young Readers) A wonderful Mystery for your summer reader to enjoy by the pool or under a starry night with a flash light to read by. this debut novel blends historical facts from the art world, the Renaissance, and World War II to create and enthralling mystery that pivots around one of the most monumental treasure hunts in history. Airborne highly recommended this book.

The Verona Trilogy-(Fiction Studio Books) This sci fi time travel trilogy will take your young reader back to 12th century Europe
with a group of teens from our future. these teens are "hard cases" but learn that though team work and personal growth anything is possible. Airborne and I really enjoyed these books and Lory Kaufman does a great job imparting historical facts in an engaging way.

Nantucket Blue-Leila Howland ( Hyperion) This is the perfect book for reading on the beach or by the pool. A little mystery and a lot of romance. I would recommend that the reader be 16 or older and although there is a sex scene in the book it is not what drives the story. This is the story of a 17 year old the summer before her senior year. She decided to take a job away from home on Nantucket for the summer. What she learns about herself and her friends becomes an engaging story that was really fun to read.

Free to Fall-Lauren Miller ( Harper Teen) Probably one of my favorite books of the summer. I would
recommend this and Deep Blue( See below) as the two books you must read this summer. Free to Fall examines a future world where society is even more dependent on technology than it is today. The main character Rory gradually awakens to the realities of relying on technology for your every decision. As the Book opens Rory is like most people 20 years in the future, she uses her Gemini ( Much like our cell phones) and the Lux app to make her very decision. Lux picks clothes to wear, music to buy and food to eat. All to make your life worry free.  In fact,  society has deemed individuals who listen to their intuition (called the "Doubt") mentally unstable. People who listen to the Doubt are institutionalized and medicated. This is a great book to read with your teen. Many great themes and discussion points.

Deep Blue-Jennifer Donnelly ( Disney Publishers) This is may favorite Fantasy book of the summer. Possibly my favorite book of the summer. Although I have to say that Free to Fall gave it a run for its money. Deep Blue is the story of four young women facing the challenges of Family expectation, learning who to trust, and making mistakes. Oh did I mention that they are all mermaids? This book is beautifully written and completely enthralling. This book is the first novel in the Waterfire series and I warn you that you will be hooked. ( Pun intended). I believe that this book will become a modern YA classic. It has all the elements that create an great story, magic, mystery, friendship, adventure, danger and romance. It also is the beginning of what I believe will become the "Hero Princesses" genre. these young women are not waiting to be saved by prince charming they band together to save their people. Only through working together can they accomplish this feat. I love the strong female characters. As a woman I like them as role models for younger women. As a mom of boys I like them as examples of qualities my boys should look for in a mate.

The Flip- Michael Phillip Cash- If you like ghost stories and old houses you will love this. A little romance thrown in for good measure. Anything you pick up from Cahs is a winner but this is his newest book.

And last but not least...

The Walking Dead complete series- The Tech Monkey wanted me to recommend. Frankly anything that can get a teen boy to read of his own free will that is not porn makes me happy.

I hope this has helped you with you choices for the best books out for summer.
